In my last blog I gave young recruits a few simple ways to keep safe online and you can read it at https://www.dogchesterpd.com/blog . What can you do though if things don’t go to plan and go wrong. 1. Talk to someone you can trust like an adult if not your parents, someone who you feel comfortable talking to. You can ring Childline and speak to a child counsellor. 2. If you are experiencing bullying or abuse, then you can report it directly to the website or app you are using. 3. Delete things you have shared that you may be worried or concerned about or find a way to hide them. 4. If someone tries to threaten or even blackmail you (by threatening to reveal on the internet personal information you have shared with them, then tell the Police or CEOP. CEOP have a website at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ , they have experienced child protection advisors you can help - you. Don’t give in to threats, get help. 5. Lastly plan for the future to make it doesn’t happen again and make sure to change your privacy settings to protect yourself . That’s all for now Till the next time BE GOOD and KEEP SAFE. 15 March 2023 Hi Kids, Chief Growler here, hope you are all keeping well and safe. My officers are constantly dealing with issues around online safety, or in Inspector Snatchers case simply logging on typing with one finger on each hand. There is a lot of information on the internet and its also a great way to keep in touch with friends with things like Facebook. Its also a place where some not very nice people might trick you into sharing things about yourself or if you have shared something it could be used to frighten or bully you. Here are some simple ways to help keep you safe: 1. Before you post something online -THINK! Especially if its something you want your grown ups to see. Remember once you posited something you do not control it anymore other people can use it. 2. This is a Bigee, keep your personal details like your phone number, where you live, your birthday or name of your school private. That means don’t give them out to anyone. If posting a picture be careful it doesn’t show clues like your school badge for example. 3. Phishing, know not the type I like doing sat around a lake on a nice sunny day. I mean the type where people try to trick you into giving out your passwords for example. Never click a link that comes in an email asking you to log on or share your details. 4. Think about who you might be talking to, people have some very clever ways to try and trick you into trusting them,. You know even if like and trust someone you have met online don’t give out your personal info, 5. Never give out your password, you should make strong passwords but just make sure you can remember them. Do not become like Inspector Snatcher who is always writing them down as he cannot remember them. 6. If you have a webcam keep it covered whenever you are not using it as there is nasty software called viruses that can let someone get control of your web cam. I think that’s probably enough for now in my next blog I will give you some ideas what to do if things go wrong online for you. Till the next time BE GOOD and KEEP SAFE. Chief Growler
